Sustainable Mattress Materials for Private-Label Brands

Natural mattress materials: wool, cotton, coconut fiber and a latex sample on a wooden table (illustrative image)

Short answer

A more sustainable mattress starts with materials buyers can verify: natural fibers, certified textiles and foam, recycled fabrics and components that can be reprocessed. BRN Sleep Products works with natural latex, wool, organic cotton, bamboo, linen and coconut fiber, FSC®-certified materials, SEAQUAL® fabrics made from recycled plastic and steel springs that can be reprocessed.

Many retail buyers in Europe ask what a mattress is made of and what happens to it at the end of its life. For a private-label brand, the answer has to be specific and verifiable. These are the materials and certificates BRN works with.

Natural fibers and latex

  • Natural latex
  • Wool
  • Organic cotton
  • Bamboo
  • Linen
  • Coconut fiber

Recycled fabrics: SEAQUAL®

SEAQUAL® fabrics are made from recycled plastic. BRN offers them in its collections, giving brands a recycled-content option they can communicate on the product.

Certified textiles, foam and wood

  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (14.HTR.42882, Hohenstein) for textile components
  • CertiPUR as the foam standard
  • FSC® (C178848) for wood-based materials

End of life

Steel springs can be reprocessed. BRN also makes Airwave, a recyclable mattress with a washable, breathable cover, made without the springs, foam or latex used in conventional mattresses.

Fewer containers for the same order

Roll-pack cuts shipping volume by up to 75%, so the same number of mattresses needs fewer containers. See what a roll-pack mattress is.

A certified management system

BRN holds ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management, alongside ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 10002:2018. Read our certification guide.

How to check a sustainability claim

  1. Ask which component the claim refers to: cover, filling, foam or springs.
  2. Ask for the certificate number and look it up.
  3. Check that the certified material is the one in your approved sample.
